In 1914 she obtained permenat teaching position of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Alama was the first fine arts graduate of Howard University in 1921.In 1972 Alma became the first african american female to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American which is in New York. Also in 2009,two of Almas' pantings Watsuia and Sky light shown on the bottom were chosen by Michelle Obama to be hung up in the white house during Obamas term.
